No team has won the IPL more than the Mumbai Indians. Five titles. A dynasty built slowly, then suddenly, and then repeatedly.
They did it without always being the flashiest team. They lost early finals, finished last twice, and rebuilt more than once. But when it mattered, MI delivered.
Mumbai Indians IPL History

If you want to understand Mumbai Indians IPL history — the titles, the records, the players who made it happen — this is the full picture.
How Mumbai Indians start?
Mumbai Indians were formed in 2008 as part of the BCCI’s Indian Premier League.
Reliance Industries, owned by the Ambani family, acquired the franchise. Nita Ambani has been the owner and driving force since day one.
The franchise is based at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, one of the loudest venues in world cricket.
Their first-ever XI included Sanath Jayasuriya, Robin Uthappa, Harbhajan Singh, and Ashish Nehra.
Sachin Tendulkar was named the Icon Player. It was a squad full of names, but the early seasons were inconsistent.
MI finished 5th in 2008, 7th in 2009, and as runners-up in 2010, when Sachin won the Orange Cap with 618 runs.
They were building, but the trophy kept slipping away.

Key Players Across the Eras
- Sachin Tendulkar was the icon who gave the franchise its identity. He played his final game in MI blue in 2013 and never won the IPL title — one of cricket’s quirks.
- Lasith Malinga is arguably MI’s greatest T20 bowler. He took 28 wickets in 2011, won the CLT20 Man of the Tournament award, and helped shape MI’s bowling culture for over a decade.
- Rohit Sharma turned the franchise from contenders into champions. His captaincy is the thread that runs through all five titles.
- Jasprit Bumrah arrived in 2013 as an unknown who dismissed Virat Kohli. He left as the best T20 fast bowler of his generation.
- Kieron Pollard played 150+ matches for MI, hit over 200 sixes, and was the team’s most dangerous finisher for a decade.
- Hardik Pandya joined in 2015, made an immediate impact, left for the Gujarat Titans (where he won two titles), and came back in 2024. His return was high-profile and complicated.
- Suryakumar Yadav has been with MI since 2012 in various stints. His 717-run 2025 season proved he’s still the best batter in T20 cricket.
